Recorded the first non-marketing podcast yesterday with Alexis Demetriades, one of the founders, owners, and coaches of London Shootfighters gym. Alexis is a member of the GB Olympic wrestling squad, an expert in all aspects of mixed martial arts (boxing, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu / submissions), and a top bloke.
We cover off; the history of MMA (what it is / where it came from), the state of the sport today, the history of Londonshoot, pro training, self-defence, traditional martial arts, and Alexis's attitude to training.
I think MMA is a much misunderstood sport, I'd be interested to hear what everyone else thinks.
Only 30 mins or so in length and is, as per usual, unedited (and has the sound of tubes in the background).

Marketing people talk for hours and hours, fighting people talk for 30 minutes. What does that tell us?

I much prefer watching K1 or Muay Thai fights to boxing. Its so much more interesting, more tactical, and more exciting at the same time.

Really interesting podcast Paul. Great to hear somebody talk articulately and with passion about his sport. Feel I want to take it up but he probably has an age limit - and I couldn't stand the pain anyway !!!! I'll continue to join the gentle geriatrics on Tuesday evenings.

Great Podcast, one of the best yet.
I found all the marketing speakers (including me) a little reserved, like they were afraid of being passionate. Only a little bit, but still.
There was none of that with Alex. Obviously passionate and obviously an expert, and obviously someone who cares about his sport and his students. (Is that the right word?)
Martial Arts people are always much maligned, I feel. For example if you swapped MMA for ‘making organic deckchairs’ or something, the press would be all over him.
And obviously it was shorter. Which was nice.

His attitude is infectious, as is Paul's - the other head coach at Londonshoot, they are the club.
Dad, Helio Gracie, who some would argue, created much of the foundation of modern MMA, is still training aged 93.

Now that's impressive but I don't think I'd want to mess with him. (I might hurt him !!!!!)
