I went MMA training a couple of days ago, for the first time in about 4 weeks. Even though I've been trying to stay in shape by running, cycling, and of course doing my press-ups, I found myself doing what everyone does when they haven't trained in a while. I found myself expending too much unnecessary energy - gripping too tightly, breathing to quickly, and rushing everything. After a while my coach shouted at me - telling me to think 'pace' and 'control'. I relaxed, paced myself, and things were much better.
I've been thinking about this ever since. And I reckon it may be answer the to the difference between a runner, and someone who runs. The difference is pace. And what pace gives you - control. Pace allows you think ahead and plan. Pace allows you to judge (clearly). Pace allows you to go harder, longer, faster, or, softer, shorter, and slower. Pace is what gets you to the finish, the end.
And it's not just running and fighting. A good speech has pace. A funny comedian. An interesting blog. And a happy life.
So pace yourself people (though not too much).

I'm not sure Steve Prefontaine would agree: http://www.nike.com/nikebiz/nikebiz.jhtml?page=5&item=steve
